City Secrets: Encants Flea Market

They say one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure. I defiantly agree with this sturdy claim and this good old saying can be backed up by my mountain high stacks of second hand bargains. I’m not saying my finds have been easy to collect, I’m not saying my hoarding process has been quick, cost effective or even healthy. What I am saying is once you know what you want, what you like and where to get it the hunt for thrift goods is not only exciting and rewarding, but extremely satisfying.

So let’s get down to Barcelona bargain hunting. I know of a place where you can sift through piles, heaps and clusters of on first glance absolute junk. This first glance observation I can assure you will soon be transformed into an overwhelming sensation to dive in and get your hands dirty. As the eyes begin to focus and the seller’s calls pierce though your pricked ears, the needs to rummage will take control. That once one man’s rubbish will find its way into your home, onto your mantelpiece and into your wardrobe. This junk-yard haven bargain hunters, goes by the name of Encants Flea Market. The most notorious flea market to be found in Barcelona.

Power tool anyone? Cosmetics, antiques, bikes, books, clothes, carpets and furniture can all be found crammed in and stacked up ready for the taking. I’m warning you now there is no consistency to the layout of these abandoned knick knacks. This miscellaneous market marvel is worlds apart from its neighbouring retailer the Glories Shopping Center.

Pricing up the goods…

Mercat Del Encant is the perfect place for an old fashioned haggle. Don’t give in at the first value claim or the first sign of costing danger, the locals are up for a little price war. I guarantee a small push it the right direction will see the sellers claims crumble and the wallet will be safe to make a welcoming appearance. Not only does Encants offer a good old barter, a professional antiques auction takes place every morning at 7:00 am for the serious collectors. If you want exquisite then make sure you rise and shine to fight for Flea finery. The afternoon begins with auction number two opening midday for the late starter and commercial buyers. The unsold goods from the morning sessions tend to make a second appearance but with a generous knock-off price tag. If you’re lucky this will be your moment to bid for the ultimate bargain, make sure you’ve got your eyes on the prize for the deal of the century.
