The Area

Like the rest of the zones in this area of Barcelona, Barceloneta’s history dates back centuries and centuries. Barcelona has always been a partly maritime city, and the port in Barceloneta, has, for the last four hundred years, been Barcelona’s link with the rest of the world. Until relatively recently, Barceloneta remained an industrial port rather than a tourist destination. However things are changing, and in recent years, there has been much investment in this area of Barcelona, especially with the addition of a man made beach in the last ten years.

Barceloneta is the centre of Barcelona’s seafood restaurant business, and many traditional paella restaurants serving up Barceloneta ports’s lastest catch can be found. Of course the beach is only a stones throw away, and with it the Harbour Port Vell and Marina, with the Maremagnum Entertainment Complex. Just back from the beach is the Olympic Village, built especially for the Barcelona Olympic games in the nineties.

There are easy links to the other sights of Barcelona, the cable car going directly from Barceloneta port to Montjuic, and of course Las Ramblas lead directly to the harbour. There are various metros along the seafront including Bogatell, Barceloneta, Marina, and Ciutadella Villa.
